Author Meets Zero-Turn!

I'm lucky to be alive and well after my experience with the zero-turn mower this week.  I mean...who in the world would ever think a person could steer and stop a lawn mower without a steering wheel or breaks???  It was certainly a problem for me!  Thank goodness the neighbors weren't home to have ring-side seats to my horrific trip around the yard...first in circles the in a straight line for the road all the while I'm trying to figure out what in the heck those damned handlebars in front of me were for!

The dog was barking and the goats were hollering while I made my way at full-speed toward the road until I finally did the only thing left to do...turned the key off...closed my eyes...and prayed that the mower would stop before I flew across the road into the bean field and beyond.  Thankfully, I did...unscathed.  Unfortunately, the two-year old pussy willow didn't fare so well.  May it forever rest in peace.

You would think with the details and pictures my sexy landlord provided, he would have remembered that I not only needed to know how to START the darned thing...I also would need to know how to DRIVE it too!  When I texted him later that day, I was sure to tell him that I thought I was going to die on his big bad zero-turn mower and assured him that when I get ready to replace my broken one in the spring, there would not be a zero-turn in my future.

Once I semi-mastered the operation of the zero-turn beast, I was able to enjoy one of my favorite tasks of mowing the lawn. The reason I enjoy this task so much is being able to ride around the property and enjoy the little things.  This week's little thing was the multitude of butterflies in all the wildflowers....ummm...weeds to some people...but heaven to the butterflies. I have one particular patch of some weed that looks like miniature daisies that were absolutely filled with the tiny yellow cabbage butterflies. There must have been a hundred of them out there!  It's those little things that make my heart smile and appreciate my little part of the world.

See you next week with another saga from the woods!

I love the peace and quiet of living in the country.  It inspires me and refreshes me at the end of a long day.
